斯巴達經驗值:3年

首次接觸斯巴達障礙賽係2018年,香港好少有咁樣既比賽,一開始只係抱住玩下既心態,但玩完公開賽後,就愛上了!比賽過程除左要過障礙,仲要有越野跑技巧。斯巴達令我有明確目標,決心要練好過障礙既技巧,要將自己變到更強!因為斯巴達我仲愛上左越野跑,令我識到一班戰友,I love Spartan! AROO

SPARTAN SINCE: 2018

My Spartan journey helped me to cope with my mental health.
 

My first spartan race was in November 2018, encouraged
by awesome coaches at an outdoor workout group, Urban Active. It was also a time where I was pretty down and having a tough time in my life. However, training for my first ever race was a silver lining, instead of another inconvenience to the existing chaos I was living in, it was a great way to forget my troubles and focus on the goal to do my best in the race. What I didn’t realise until later, was that training was awesome to do to destress and clear my mind to cope with the mental challenges that I was facing at the time.  


Race day fast approached, and instantly I was addicted to the adrenaline, to the sportsmanship and to the feeling I had when I jumped over the fire jump for the first time.
I had a sense of accomplishment. I enjoyed it so much that I booked my next race straight away for January 2019 in the Philippines and then joined 14 more races that year. 


Preparing for Spartan races gave me purpose, a way to make lasting friendships in the workout/spartan community and a growing work ethic to strive for Top 10 in these races. I was seeing both my physical appearance changing but also my mental state too, I was enjoying life much more.  
 

What I learnt and overcame in the 2018/2019 Spartan races, allowed me to cope with the pandemic and what challenges that the pandemic caused. Even though Spartan races have been cancelled, continuing to work out, having workout buddies and using training as a self-care tool and a medium for ‘me time’ allowed me to face my stress and mental challenges easier. Without this mindset
I have now, I believe 2020 and my life now would be much harder to cope with.  I really can’t wait to resume racing!

當初我只是一位業餘路跑跑手,對斯巴達這項運動是一無所知的,直至到我參加了Spartan HK 舉辦的Community Class ,一玩就如中毒咁沉迷咗斯巴達!我覺得斯巴達非常適合喜歡挑戰,又鍾意「頂硬上」同堅持嘅我。過程中又可以認識到更多同樣Hard Core嘅朋友同教練,不斷互相鞭策,3個月內就由未玩過到訓練至膽粗粗一炮過玩Super 同Hurricane Heat,兼且愛上了越野跑(仲有做Burpees做上癮)!斯巴達嘅魔力就係不斷俾到新嘅目標俾我去衝破,而且係一個好大嘅family,去到邊度,聽到就知點做: Spartans, what is your profession? AROO! AROO! AROO!

SPARTAN SINCE: 2016

Spartan Race had changed my attitude towards exercising. I always questioned myself why I do days and days of weight training over the past 15 years, ‘staying healthy’ was not a good reason strong enough to motivate myself to keep the habit, until I participated my first Spartan Race in 2016, the fire in my heart was lit up and it actually opened my world to all kinds of competitive races. Spartan Race combines the stringent requirements of speed, stamina, strength and skills, of which I was glad that this could motivate me to try exceling myself in all these aspects.

‘I just want to win, not to be the second, but be the top’.
It might be something unachievable but this mindset should be inside Spartans and athletes, which drives you further and better.

人到中年,常有一個疑問:
自己究竟有多強,還可以更強?

2016年參加香港第一場斯巴達,便深深愛上。雖然只是入門的公開組衝刺賽,已經得知自己有很多不足的地方。開始安排不同的非人訓練,到亞洲不同的地方參加不同的賽事,不斷去打做一個鐡一般的軀體,練岀一顆熊熊鬥志的心,培養岀永遠打不死的精神!亦透過岀外的比賽,結識到不同國家的斯巴達戰士,成為朋友。在戰線上互相鼓勵,在戰線下互相分享。


經過三年的磨練,終於在2019年廣州的體育場年齡組賽事上,在太太面前,勇奪冠軍。

 

人只會覺得自己老時才是真正的老。
將步入五十的我還很年輕!

There are two things I love:
victory in sport, and sporty people.

 

Spartan Racing gives me access to both.

I’ve played competitive sports. I’ve dabbled in triathlon.
I love climbing stuff.

I THOUGHT I was a well-rounded athlete.

Spartan Racing gave me an opportunity to put my money where my mouth was.
 

My first race wasn’t pretty.

I had to use the support trusses to negotiate the monkey bars. Forget the rings. My bucket of rocks was nowhere near full. I strained just to IMAGINE how my 140 lb (soaking wet) frame could do the Hercules Hoist with a sandbag that felt TWICE my weight.
 

Each race highlighted something missing from my functional fitness.

Whether it was grip strength, lats, or trail running- each Spartan Race brought me closer to becoming that well-rounded athlete I strived to be.
 

This is the race day material that motivates me to train.

I’m in the best shape of my life- I finally like what I see in the bathroom mirror. The best part is, this hasn’t come from monotonous hours spent in a gym just to look good shirtless. I’m proud to say it’s come from enjoyable hours training alongside the best, with fresh workouts that have helped me realize my physical and mental potential.
 

Spartan Racing has given me motivation to train, strong friendships and opportunities to meet a gal who would rather run than walk along the harbour.

以前我練習模式同普通人都係一樣,平日上上跑班、體能課,週未做長課。疫情開始後,我最大改變,係要自己安排訓練內容、長課路線。初初都以為好難,但後來發覺,只係著對跑鞋、山鞋去跑啦!去上山啦!如此簡單而已!仲可以每次set少少挑戰,係手錶記錄上增加一個小皇冠!

Living in this hectic city of Hong Kong has made me realize the importance of work-life balance. That's how I started the habit of hiking two years ago. Spending time in nature indeed brings me tranquility and peace. Gradually I wanted to pursue something more challenging and adventurous which can improve my stamina and develop my persistence.

The pandemic has stopped many of us from travelling and racing. However, it has actually motivated me to try out new things and accomplish goals that I have never thought about achieving - Spartan Trifecta, a few half-marathon virtual races, 56k-overnight hikes etc.

As a Spartan and trail-running newbie, I find these new hobbies rewarding although the training process might be painful. I also enjoy exploring hidden places and trails in Hong Kong. I appreciate my Spartan friends who have made all the training sessions and virtual races so worth remembering.Stay motivated and stay healthy! Aroooo!
